Rotary is a worldwide organization of 1.2 million business and professional persons who are dedicated to high ethical standards, perform charitable work locally, support humanitarian projects around the world, and promote international peace through understanding. As a Rotarian, I strive to uphold our motto, "Service Above Self", by giving back to my community while enjoying the cameraderie of like-minded members.

Speaker Guidelines

REVISED 12/28/08

When extending an invitation to potential speakers at the Manchester Rotary Club, the following guidelines should be followed:

  • 1) Inform the speaker of the typical format and time schedule for our meetings:
  • – Meeting starts promptly at 6 PM
  • – Dinner is served between 6:00 and 6:30.
  • – Club business, committee reports, happy thoughts between 6:30 and 7:00.
  • – Time allotted for speaker is generally 30 minutes (7 – 7:30) including any time for questions/answers.
  • – Meeting is adjourned promptly at 7:30 PM.
  • 2) Speaking topics should provide club members with topics that are of an educational, informative, instructional or humorous nature.
  • 3) Speakers should not attempt to sell, promote or entice members in any product, material or service. Nor should the speaker offer special deals or discounts.
  • 4) Speakers may leave information, descriptive brochures and business cards as they pertain to the topic of their presentation.
  • 5) Ask the speaker if any special equipment or arrangements are necessary, such as a projection screen, table, etc.

Rotary members should be polite and act with courtesy even if they don’t agree with the speaker, his/her topic or the particular information discussed.

If you must leave the meeting early and cannot be present during the speaker’s presentation, you should approach the speaker during the meal and express your apology.

If a speaker and/or topic is announced in the Spinner and you have any objection, you should contact the club president and state your reason(s) for the opposition.

Cell phones and pagers should be turned off during the meeting unless you need these for emergency purposes.  If you must answer a call, please leave the dining room to speak on your phone.
